By choosing Rittal HD enclosure, you are guaranteed intelligent solutions with the very highest standards of reliability. Rittal supplies solutions for every hygienic requirement, which means you can rely on the safety of the application. This includes applications in open processes, where the resistance of the seal to detergents and disinfectants is crucial. The Rittal Hygienic Design solutions for food safety are based on, European standards and directives, EU regulations, and Requirements in the food industry

Cleanliness Guaranteed!

Adding the Rittal Hygienic Design (HD) enclosure with your open processes in the food industry, rooms are cleaned due to their ease of cleaning. The HD enclosure is compatible with accessories such as wall spacer brackets, and HD-compatible cable glands complete the range.

Precisely engineered for your applications

The HD enclosures are available with screw covers for smaller, integrated applications or hinged doors for larger installations. Both are created from 304 stainless steel with a 400-grain brushed surface. Wall and door surfaces are angled to prevent objects from adhering, so water runs off easily.

Ready to adapt to on-site demands

Rittal HD enclosure can be mounted with rounded stand-off brackets located at the back to help improve the flow of water around the unit during wash-down procedures. The larger HD enclosure can be mounted on HD leveling feet and fitted with a wire shelf to assist with cabling.

Tight Seals every time!

HD enclosure continuous bright blue silicone seal door gaskets can be easily replaced as necessary without any special tools.

The benefits of Hygiene Design Enclosure:

The HD enclosure provides design engineers with more options and added versatility. Furthermore, it has a range of additional benefits:

  • Shorter cleaning times while using less water and fewer chemicals
  • Reduced downtime for cleaning/maintenance
  • High IP rating from IP 66/69K
  • Significantly reduced risk of contamination
  • Enhanced protection for customers/employees
  • Built and tested to NEMA 4X specifications
  • FDA-approved gasket materials

The Features of Hygiene Design Enclosure:

  • Roof Slope – Nothing left standing on top surfaces, which leads to good visibility. The cleaning agents run off independently.
  • Cable Glands – There are no places for deposits to collect through the elimination of external threads and undercuts.
  • Levelling Feet – The elimination of external threads and undercuts leaves no deposits to be collected.
  • Supporting Structure - Thanks to the supporting structure there are no places for deposits to collect. This design is significantly simpler for installation due to its integrated cabling routing grille.

Choosing the correct ingress protection (IP) for your application!

What is an IP Rating?

An IP rating, better known as Ingress Protection Rating or can be referred to as International Protection, indicates the level of protection to which a product is protected against the disturbance of solid objects, dust, accidental contact, and water.

IP ratings are applied to various enclosures which are used in various sectors and industries including electronic and mechanical systems in industrial and residential environments

The importance of an IP rating

Manufacturers are always looking for ways to improve the performance of their products. This can be achieved by maximizing performance, reducing costs, and ensuring that the product has a long lifetime. There are many ways to achieve this, but one of the best ways is to make sure your product has an IP rating.

An IP rating is a standard that is used to measure the extent of protection against intrusion from environmental factors. The manufacturer assigns a rating to each component or material in order to determine how well they protect against intrusion from environmental factors such as liquid water, dust, and more.

How is IP Rating measured?

An IP rating is usually used for the level of protection an enclosure provides to electrical or mechanical components and this is made by two or three numbers.

  • The first number implies protection from solid materials or objects
  • The Second number identifies the protection from liquids such as water
  • The third number indicates the protection against mechanical impacts but is not usually used, it is not a part of the IEC 60529

The IP Rating is defined by the EN 60529 international standards, and each number IP rating has a different meaning. A digit shows the level of protection with 0 being the lowest where there is no protection whilst a higher number means there is more protection.

Finding the right IP rating for your enclosure

Choosing the correct enclosure and IP rating determines is crucial to ensure your components are protected. There is various enclosure with different IP ratings, to meet a wide range of requirements for outdoor or indoor applications.

For example, if you want your outdoor enclosure to be waterproof to prevent water from entering, then you will add an IP rating of IP67 or higher. The higher number means that it offers better protection against intrusion from environmental factors than lower numbers like IP40 or IP31.

Ingress Protection Rating Table

First Digit
Solids - Intrusion
Second Digit
Liquids - Moisture
0 No protection  0 No protection
1 Protected against solid objects over 60mm, e.g. accidental touch by hands  1 Protected against vertically falling drops of water, e.g. condensation
2 Protected against solid objects over 12mm, e.g. fingers  2 Protected against direct sprays of water up to 15 degrees from the vertical.
3 Protected against solids objects over 2.5mm, e.g tools and wires  3 Protected against direct sprays of water up to 60 degrees from the vertical.
4 Protected against solid objects over 1mm, e.g. Wires and nails  4 Protected against water splashed from all directions, limited ingress permitted.
5 Protected against dust-lmited ingress, no harmful depsits.  5 Protected against low-pressure jets ofwater from all directions, limited ingress permitted.
6+  Totally protected against dust. 6+ Protected against strong jets of water, e.g. on limited ingress permitted.
